  • Distinguishing Characteristics: “Light Nurse” is lighter in color than the other nurse sharks in our Atlantic Shark tank and is larger than “Junior”.
  • Interesting Fact: “Light Nurse” and “Dark Nurse” have been together at Jenkinson’s Aquarium since April 2000. “Light Nurse” will often come up and take food from the fish in the exhibit during their feeding time, but is usually the last shark to come up during her feeding time.

  • Distinguishing Characteristics: “Dark Nurse” is darker in color than the other nurse sharks in the Atlantic Shark tank. He also has dark brown markings on his right pectoral (bottom) fin. “Dark Nurse” is the largest nurse shark in our Atlantic Shark tank.
  • Interesting Fact: : “Dark Nurse” is often seen lying on the bottom of the tank with the other two nurse sharks, “Light Nurse” and “Junior”. He also spends time resting on the bottom with the southern stingray.

  • Distinguishing Characteristics: “Junior” is the smallest nurse shark in the Atlantic Shark tank.
  • Interesting Fact: “Junior” is a social shark and can be seen spending most of the day with the other nurse sharks. She is also seen in the tank residing near our southern stingray. “Junior” tends to be an awkward swimmer, so it’s not uncommon to see her with rust marks on her skin from occasionally bumping into the anchor in the exhibit.

  • Distinguishing Characteristics: “Light Sandbar” is much lighter in color and is larger than the other sandbar shark in our Atlantic Shark tank.
  • Interesting Fact: “Light Sandbar” is the fastest swimming shark at Jenkinson’s Aquarium. During the feedings, she will zoom around the tank so fast that the feeders occasionally have a hard time feeding her. She will also not eat butterfish, a fish we feed to our other sharks.

  • Gender: Female
  • Distinguishing Characteristics: “Dark Sandbar” is much darker in color and smaller than the other sandbar shark in the Atlantic Shark tank.
  • Interesting Fact: Jenkinson’s Aquarium acquired this shark from another facility that did not feel she would be a good shark to put on exhibit due to some scratches on her face. We took her in, cared for her, and she has been on exhibit ever since! “Dark Sandbar” can be seen swimming quickly around the exhibit during the feedings like our other sandbar shark, but is not nearly as quick!

  • Scientific Name: Carcharias taurus
  • Arrival Date: June 7, 2004
  • Location: Atlantic Shark tank
  • Gender: Male
  • Distinguishing Characteristics: “Raggie” is the larger of our two sandtiger sharks. He has a brown spot on his first dorsal (top) fin and a black line on the edge of both dorsal fins
  • Interesting Fact: “Raggie” is the most aggressive of all the sharks at Jenkinson’s Aquarium. He swims rather slow and does not bother the other species of fish in the tank with him. Also, the name “Raggie” comes from another name for sandtiger sharks, which is the raggedtooth shark.

  • Scientific Name: Carcharias taurus

  • Gender: Male
  • Distinguishing Characteristics: Swaj is the smaller of our two sandtiger sharks. He doesn’t have a brown spot on his first dorsal (top) fin like our other sandtiger, “Raggie”, and has a black line on the edge of only one dorsal fin.
  • Interesting Fact: When “Swaj” (which is jaws spelled backwards) first arrived at Jenkinson’s Aquarium, he only weighed 18 lbs. and was only 46 inches! Now he’s about 6½ feet long and about 175 lbs. Swaj spends much of his time slowly swimming along the bottom of the exhibit. He is also not as aggressive as our other sandtiger shark.

  • Gender: Female
  • Distinguishing Characteristics: “Ray Ray” is currently the only Southern Stingray in our Atlantic Shark exhibit.
  • Interesting Fact: “Ray Ray” will jump out of the water to get her food and often splashes the feeders as they’re trying to feed her! On days when the feedings don’t take place, “Ray Ray” is usually swimming along the bottom of the exhibit or hanging out with our nurse sharks.

Penguins

  • Birthday - May 11, 2013
  • Bead Colors - 2 sparkle teal, 1 medium blue, 1 peach on left wing
  • Weight - 5.1 pounds
  • Personality Traits - Zaina is very affection towards the satff members. She needs to be next to the whenever they're cleaning or feeding. She hasn't quite warmed up to the rest of the penguins yet. Zaina is also a little quirky.
  • Interesting Fact - She is the first baby hatched here at Jenkinson's Aquarium in 7 years!!
  • Favorite enrichment/toy item - dog plushy

Agulhas

  • Weight – 7.4 pounds
  • Personality Traits – Agulhas can be very affectionate towards the staff members and will vocalize when no one is paying attention to him. However he has been known to be a bit feisty at times.
  • Interesting Fact – Agulhas is named after the Agulhas Current which brings nutrient-rich cold water from the Indian Ocean to the coast of South Africa where our penguins are found!
  • Favorite enrichment toy/other item – bear plushy
  • Related to – Dassen (mother), L.P. (father), Checkers (grandmother), Kringle (aunt), Jonesy (great-grandfather) and Zaina (second cousin).
